Droughts may affect more than 75% of world’s population by 2050

 


ANKARA – Droughts may affect more than three-quarters of the world's population by 2050, according to the United Nations on World Drought Day.

Since 1995, the day has focused on changing public attitudes toward the leading cause of desertification and land degradation.

This year's theme, "Rising Together from Drought," emphasizes the importance of taking action early to avoid disastrous consequences for humanity and the environment.

According to data compiled by Anadolu Agency from scientific findings and reports by international institutions, drought is a growing global trend due to global warming and dwindling water resources.

According to a World Meteorological Organization (WMO) report in 2021, the number and duration of droughts have increased by 29 percent since 2000.

According to UNICEF, one in every four children is expected to live in drought-stricken areas by 2040

Africa is the most affected.

Between 1900 and 2019, 11.7 million people were killed as a result of drought-related causes, with Africa suffering the most, with 134 droughts in the last two decades.

In the last decade, Europe has experienced 45 droughts. The cost to Europe has surpassed USD27 billion, with 15 USD of continental land and 17 USD of population affected.

Drought-related damage to agricultural products in the United States has reached USD250 billion over the last century.

Asia had the highest number of fatalities.

Drought, the most common natural disaster affecting humans worldwide after floods, has reduced India's gross domestic product by 2% to 5%. Since 2000, it has reduced agricultural production in Australia by 18%.

Meanwhile, Somalia, Zimbabwe, Djibouti, Mauritania, and South Africa are among the most vulnerable to drought.
