Nigeria fares poorly in the Environment Performance Index 2022

Nigeria, Africa's most populous country, was ranked 168th out of 180 countries in the Environment Performance Index (EPI) 2022.

According to the report, the continent's largest economy ranked 41st out of 46 countries in the Sub-Saharan region, according to researchers at Yale Center for Environmental Law & Policy and Center for International Earth Science Information Network at Columbia University's Earth Institute.

Nigeria received a score of 28.32 out of 100 for 'environment and sustainability.' On this metric, it ranks alongside Chad, Mauritania, Madagascar, Ghana, and Liberia as one of the African continent's worst performers.

Seychelles ranked first in the Sub-Saharan region, with a global score of 32 (out of 100), followed by Botswana (35) and Sao Tome and Principe (32). (38).

EPI is an international ranking system that assesses a country's environmental health and sustainability. The evaluation is based on 40 performance indicators organized around three policy goals: environmental health, ecosystem vitality, and climate change.

Nigeria, along with Cameroon, the Central African Republic, India, Pakistan, and Lesotho, is one of the world's six worst performers in terms of environmental health.

This means that Africa's largest economy has failed to protect its people from environmental health risks such as poor air quality, heavy metals, sanitation and drinking water, and waste management.

Recent studies also show that poor air quality has a negative impact on people's health in Nigeria. According to the State of Global Air report, approximately 68,500 people died in 2019 as a result of poor air quality.

In 2019, at least 1,650 people died as a result of ozone pollution. This represents a more than 24 percent increase in deaths attributed to unsafe levels of ozone since 2013, when 1,330 people died as a result of ozone pollution, according to the report.

According to a new update on pollution and health published in the journal Lancet on May 17, 2022, economic losses due to poor air quality are estimated to be around 1% of the country's GDP.

The country has also performed poorly in terms of solid waste management and ocean plastic pollution. This is concerning because Nigeria generates approximately 32 million tonnes of waste per year, ranking among the highest in Africa, according to a UN Industrial Development Organization report.

2.5 million tonnes of this is plastic waste, which pollutes the oceans.

According to the Notre Dame Global Adaptation Index, Nigeria is the 53rd most climate vulnerable country, but the 6th least prepared to adapt to climate change.

Nigeria is not doing enough to address the risks, as evidenced by its poor performance in EPI 2022 on "climate policy."

The country was ranked 133 (out of 180) in this category, a drop of more than 12 places in a decade.

The EPI findings are significant because the Climate Change Act (2021), which was signed on November 18, 2021, has yet to be implemented in the country. It aimed to provide a framework for reducing greenhouse gas emissions while also incorporating climate change actions into national plans and programs.

President Muhammadu Buhari announced at the 26th Conference of Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change in Glasgow that Nigeria would become a Net Zero country by 2060. The term "net-zero emissions" refers to the point at which the country's activities no longer emit greenhouse gases into the atmosphere. However, according to EPI 2022, this appears to be far from reality under business as usual.
