Mayor to protect 2 whale sharks spotted off Mactan Island

 

CEBU CITY – Although they are not native to Mactan Island waters, two whale sharks were discovered in the seawater off the coast of Lapu-Lapu City on Monday, according to Mayor Junard Chan.
The appearance of the two giants, locally known as "butanding," astounded a group of people who saw and videotaped them while passing by the area on Saturday.
He promised to put measures in place to protect sea creatures and "make our oceans a safe home" for them.

Although "butanding" are common in Cebu's southern town of Oslob, particularly in Barangay Tan-awan, where hundreds of local and foreign tourists visit for whale shark-watching activities, the people of Lapu-Lapu saw the gentle giants for the second time.

A whale shark was caught in a fisherman's net in the seawaters of Barangay Maribago in June 2021.

Boyla Gilig, a diver, reported that it was feeding in the area when it was accidentally trapped.

Divers have been working with the local fishery office to protect the butanding since then.

The City Agriculture and Fishery Office, according to Chan, will conduct a study to identify areas that could be a safe haven for whale sharks, where they can swim freely without interference from village residents.
